A fair AQM scheme for aggregated ECN and non-ECN traffic

چکیده
We study the aggregated behaviour of the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) with and without Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) over a wide range of traffic conditions using different Active Queue Management (AQM) schemes. A new AQM scheme called Adaptive Rate-Queue Utilisation AQM (ARQUA) which attempts to provide high throughput while maintaining a target delay is proposed. We demonstrate via simulation the aggregated performance advantage of TCP with ECN over TCP without ECN using different versions of TCP in an environment of mixed ECN and non-ECN traffic. We demonstrate that at bottleneck routers, ECN traffic actually degrades the performance of non-ECN traffic when a single marking probability is used to randomly mark and drop the packets. A solution to this problem is proposed: an extension of ARQUA called ARQUA-DAB that dynamically allocates a fair-share bandwidth and queue capacity to each traffic type. q 2003 Elsevier B.V. Toward Ensuring Fair Service Among ECN and non ECN TCP Connections Over the Internet
Providing fair service among TCP connections over the Internet without hampering resource utilization has recently become a major performance concern. With the rapid expansion of the Internet along with its increasingly diversified client base, the demand for a reasonably fair service is getting even stronger. To meet these requirements, congestion sensing is essential. Explicit Congestion Noti...
متن کاملA Simulation Study of the Interoperability of TCPW with RED and ECN
Active Queue Management (AQM) schemes aim to stabilize router queue sizes and provide better fairness among a set of TCP connections. Random Early Detection (RED) is one of the first and well-known AQM schemes. Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) is a modified version of RED in that it notifies a sender about congestion, instead of dropping its packet. Under such AQM schemes, TCP connections...
متن کاملEnabling ECN in Multi-Service Multi-Queue Data Centers
Recent proposals have leveraged Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) to achieve high throughput low latency data center network (DCN) transport. However, most of them implicitly assume each switch port has one queue, making the ECN schemes they designed inapplicable to production DCNs where multiple service queues per port are employed to isolate different traffic classes through weighted fai...
متن کاملFast convergence to network fairness
Most AQM algorithms, such as RED, assure fairness through randomness in congestion notification. However, randomness results in fair allocation of network resources only when time limitations are not considered. This is not compatible with the current Internet, where traffic oscillations are frequent and the demand for fair treatment is rather urgent, due to short duration of most applications....
متن کاملComplementing Current Active Queue Management Schemes with Receiver- Window Modification (RWM)
Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) and Active Queue Management Schemes such as Random Early Detection (RED), Adaptive Random Early Detection (ARED) and BLUE queues have been proposed for TCP/IP networks to compensate network congestion. However, using ECN requires that ECN be supported by both TCP senders and receivers. This paper presents a novel AQM modification called Receiver-Window Mod...
